What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a common infection of the hard and soft (bone and gums) tissues of the mouth. Without proper treatment, those affected run the risk of tooth loss and possible spreading of the disease, which can cause systemic health concerns like heart disease or stroke. At Wall Centre Dental, we offer treatments for gum disease to cleanse the disease-causing bacteria and maintain a healthy oral environment to help prevent reinfection. Being able to identify the most common symptoms of gum disease can help catch the disease early and save the health of your smile.

Common indications of gum disease include:

  • Swollen inflamed gums
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Constant bad breath
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks
  • Loose, shifting teeth
  • Gum recession

Keeping Your Teeth Healthy, With Laser Dentistry

Dependable Treatment Options

Wall Centre Dental offers our patients laser gum disease care, which can remove diseased tissue and bacteria without the need for scalpels or sutures. We feature the WaterLase® dental laser to provide patients a higher level of comfort and convenience when seeking treatment. WaterLase allows us to remove infection in a minimally invasive way with many patients able to receive treatment without the need of sedation or numbing. In addition to laser gum disease care, we offer more traditional treatments as well, including:

01

Scaling and Root Planing

The first step of any gum disease treatment, we will use specialized tools to access the area below the gum line where you can’t reach with a toothbrush or floss. We will scrape away bacteria and plaque buildup along the roots of the teeth to allow for the gums to reattach in a healthy manner.

02

Osseous Surgery

Osseous surgery is used to remove infection from the gums when gum disease has progressed to advanced stages. We will remove infected gum tissue from around the teeth, leaving only healthy tissue behind. We will perform scaling and root planing of the tooth roots and the jaw bone will be reshaped so the gums can heal around the teeth.

03

Periodontal Maintenance

After gum disease treatment, you may need to come into our office every three months for periodontal maintenance. By performing routine periodontal maintenance, we can keep your oral health clean and free of disease. Periodontal maintenance includes a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums to ensure gum disease does not return.
